Sojourner's Song

“I have become a pilgrim to cure myself of being an exile.” -G. K. Chesterton

Aaron Telian

I'm a clumsy Christian on a journey of discipline and discovery with Jesus. As a recovering Pharisee, I'm learning to trust God's grace over my goodness. I love the world, and I'm excited about learning what it means to be salt and light in a Post-Christian culture. This is where I write about living the sojourn.

A Bit of Miscellany

  • We're going to be hosting the promised "Israel Night" tomorrow evening here at the house, so if you can make it please come. If you can't make it, the Parish family has generously opened their home Tuesday February 26th so I can share the pictures and stories a second time.
  • After I dropped my camera early in the trip, my battery life kept getting worse and worse until the end of the trip when I was switching batteries several times a day. Suffice to say I'm currently in the market for a new camera, so if anyone has any recommendations, please send them my direction. I'm looking for something in the 5-8 megapixel range, with 12-18x optical zoom, fast USB data transfer, image stabilization, and good battery life, preferably for less than $400.
  • If you know me at all, you know that I'm not much for television. However, on the flight home, when my eyes and brain were too tired to do anything else, I watched a video called Martian Child that was actually pretty good. It's about a widowed Science Fiction author who decides to adopt a troubled, reclusive young boy who thinks he's from Mars. I appreciated the video's redemptive theme and strong affirmation of the value of life. (Disclaimer: the in-flight version didn't contain any objectionable material but it had been "edited for content." So if you're going to see it, take the normal precautions.)
  • Thanks to the persistence of my brothers, I ski now, and ride lifts and fall down and stuff. I'm not very good at it yet, but it's cool.

12-18x zoom severely limits your set of possibilities... which in the case of digital camera shopping is actually a good thing.

Perhaps it's predictable, but the camera I would recommend is the Canon PowerShot S5. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Optical-Stabilized/dp/B000Q3043Y

It has a 12x zoom, optical image stabilization, 8 MP sensor, and excellent battery life (I get over 500 shots per set of AA batteries with mine). I own its precursor, the Canon S3, and I could scarcely be happier with it (namely... the noise level in less than bright situations is a bit high, and some fisheye distortion exists at the widest angle).

... Or the S3, for that matter. It's an excellent camera, is a bit less expensive, and doesn't seem to have as much noise as the S5.

Hi Aaron,

You don't know me, but I am a friend of the Pipolos. I found your blog through Michaels Facebook and I have been reading it with interest.

I'll start with your trip to Israel. I went there with my family in 1987, and seeing your pictures and reading your descriptions brought back a lot of feelings and memories. It was and still is one of the highlights of my life. There is nothing like the feeling of walking the same places that our Lord walked. I hope to someday take my own family to visit that country. It has changed the way I "see" the Bible.

By way of introduction, I am married to Tony for 17 years and we have 5 wonderful children. We worship with the Pipolos on Sundays. I bought the 2 Kinder doelings from the Kennedy's last summer. And I am a fellow soujourner whose greatest desire is to promote and further the Kingdom of Jesus the Christ.

Oh, and I just got a new camera last fall and have been very happy with it. It's a Casio Exilim. 7.2 MP. However, the zoom is only a 3x, I think. I have charged the battery twice since October or November, that I can remember, but I probably don't use it as much as you use yours. I also don't research as much as Michael, so his advice has a lot more weight to it. :)

Michael - I'm definitely looking seriously at the Canon. Thanks for the help.

Karilee - I remember meeting you and your boys at the Breuners when us Telians visited Montana with the Becker family in 2005. Thanks for commenting; it's always fun to know who's reading.

Hi Aaron,

Just so you know, both Janelle and Tabitha have the Canon model, Janelle's is older and Tabitha's newer, but both use them constantly and are very happy with them.

Hope you find one you like!
